Fe(III) Oxide Reactivity Toward Biological versus Chemical Reduction

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Initial rates of biological (Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32, pH 6.8) and chemical (ascorbate, pH 3.0) reduction of synthetic Fe(III) oxides with a broad range of crystallinity and specific surface area were examined to assess how variations in these properties are likely to influence the kinetics of bacterial Fe(III) oxide reduction in heterogeneous natural Fe(III) oxide assemblages. The results indicate that bacterial Fe(III) oxide reduction does not respond strongly to oxide crystal thermodynamic properties (∆Gf) which exert a significant impact on the kinetics of abiotic reductive dissolution. These findings suggest that oxide mineral heterogeneity in natural soils and sediments is likely to affect initial rates of bacterial reduction (e.g. during the early stages of anaerobic metabolism following the onset of anoxic conditions) mainly via an influence on reactive surface site density and that inferences regarding the competitiveness of bacterial Fe(III) oxide reduction as a pathway for organic matter oxidation in anoxic environments cannot be based on assumed thermodynamic properties of the dominant oxide phase(s) in the soil or sediment.

Evaluation of microbial reduction of Fe(III)EDTA in a chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated NOx removal system.

A chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated process can be used to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from flue gas. In such a process, nitric oxide (NO) can be effectively absorbed by the ferrous chelate of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Fe(II)EDTA) to form Fe(II)EDTA-NO, which can be biologically regenerated by denitrifying bacteria. However, in the course of these processes, part of the Fe...

NO disproportionation at a mononuclear site-isolated Fe(2+) center in Fe(2+)-MOF-5.

The weak-field ligand environments at the metal nodes of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) mimic the electronic environment of metalloenzyme active sites, but little is known about the reactivity of MOF nodes toward small molecules of biological relevance. Here, we report that the ferrous ions in Fe(2+)-exchanged MOF-5 disproportionate nitric oxide to produce nitrous oxide and a ferric nitrito co...

Long-range electron transport to Fe(III) oxide via pili with metallic-like conductivity.

The mechanisms for Fe(III) oxide reduction by Geobacter species are of interest because Geobacter species have been shown to play an important role in Fe(III) oxide reduction in a diversity of environments in which Fe(III) reduction is a geochemically significant process. Geobacter species specifically express pili during growth on Fe(III) oxide compared with growth on soluble chelated Fe(III),...

Reduction of TcO4- by sediment-associated biogenic Fe(II)

The potential for reduction of TcO4 (aq) to poorly soluble TcO2 · nH2O(s) by biogenic sediment-associated Fe(II) was investigated with three Fe(III)-oxide containing subsurface materials and the dissimilatory metal-reducing subsurface bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. Two of the subsurface materials from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford and Oak Ridge sites contained significant amo...

Suboxic deposition of ferric iron by bacteria in opposing gradients of Fe(II) and oxygen at circumneutral pH.

The influence of lithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria on patterns of ferric oxide deposition in opposing gradients of Fe(II) and O(2) was examined at submillimeter resolution by use of an O(2) microelectrode and diffusion microprobes for iron. In cultures inoculated with lithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria, the majority of Fe(III) deposition occurred below the depth of O(2) penetration. In...
